The heart of the untitled Hero

There was once a Jewish man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho when bandits robbed him along the way. They beat him severely, stripped him naked, and left him half dead.

“Soon, a Jewish priest walking down the same road came upon the wounded man. Seeing him from a distance, the priest crossed to the other side of the road and walked right past him, not turning to help him one bit.

“Later, a religious man, a Levite, came walking down the same road and likewise crossed to the other side to pass by the wounded man without stopping to help him.

Finally, another man, a Samaritan, came upon the bleeding man and was moved with tender compassion for him. He stooped down and gave him first aid, pouring olive oil on his wounds, disinfecting them with wine, and bandaging them to stop the bleeding. Lifting him up, he placed him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn. Then he took him from his donkey and carried him to a room for the night. The next morning he took his own money from his wallet and gave it to the innkeeper with these words: ‘Take care of him until I come back from my journey. If it costs more than this, I will repay you when I return.’  So, now, tell me, which one of the three men who saw the wounded man proved to be the true neighbor?”
The religious scholar responded, “The one who demonstrated kindness and mercy.”Jesus said, “You must go and do the same as he.” (Luke 10:25-37TPT)

This scene in the movie series reminded me of these story of the person who  had the courage to help someone in need when no one else did. From the shepherd boy, to the good Samaritan, to the young boy who gave what he had for others and up to the king who laid his life to save the lost-- they had one thing in common: Their heart. It also reminded me of the people who just passed by the wounded Jewish and the only person who stopped and helped him. those person who were scared to take the burden of the weak and chose to avoid it and the one who stepped up and stood up for the weak.

"If I should have the power, money, position, or if I could be (someone great) --I could help them (the needy)". how many times have we heard this line--this excuse being used by some to not see the needs of the needy. It keeps us from doing something to help them. We also don't have the guts to open our door to them and take full responsibility, to fight for them until the end, even against all odds. Because we are afraid that it may affect our lives and that meddling with other lives may put us in a difficult situation where there will be no turning back. Therefore we choose to be silent as if nothing is happening around us. On the other hand, the ones who are powerful and in high positions ignore the poor. They turn a blind eye to the helpless as if they are invisible and non-exist, they only think of themselves and only help out for the sake of popularity.
Their eyes can't see and their ears can't hear.

we like to watch movies about brave heroes, who fight injustice, save the helpless, feel compassion to the poor and defend the weak. for us they are cool people, but do hero exist in real life? is there someone who is brave enough to take the side of the poor? someone who can defend justice? someone who can save the helpless and extend a helping hand to the needy? is it true, that we need a hero to help us in this unfair world? a hero who doesn't ignore the weak, wont turn a blind eye and is not deaf to their cry?

Is there a hero living among us?

It seems like they are nowhere to be found; just a fantasy created in our mind and far removed from reality. But are they really a fantasy? Do they only exist in the movies or do they really live among us? perhaps, it is us who don't notice them but they are really there. perhaps, the hero we are looking for doesn't have the title and doesn't wear a cape. maybe real heroes are everywhere; perhaps we already met them somewhere. it can be on the bus who give up his seat for you. it can be someone who smiles at you in the corridor, or the one who taps your shoulder when you are down or the one who lends a shoulder when you need to cry or the one who defends you when Goliath keeps on hounding you.
maybe the truth is they are ordinary people like us--people who don't have special powers but possess a heart that is willing to help--and that's what makes them extraordinary.
perhaps, you, yourself are a hero who can make an impact in people's lives. maybe, there's a hero inside us that only needs to be awakened. Maybe God is telling us that there are no requirements to be qualified as a hero. He will simply ask us, "whom shall I send? and "what is in your hand?", whatever you have or wherever you are right now he can use you because the power of the untitled hero lies in one heart. its the heart that matters in the end.

we look for a miracle everyday--a miracle that one day God will send someone to help us. but in fact the miracle were looking for is already there. its everywhere; heroes who respond to their calling. they are tired but they never quit in fact they go extra miles because they love what they do. this is the heart of the untitled hero.

"The world doesn't recognize heroes who quietly heal the elderly not just with medical expertise but with kindness; who sing to their grandparents, and who commute to distant places to see poor patients. but there they are. their light is not of this world but from a far greater source". -Karen Huang
